Abstract

The development of liberalism in the twentieth century has to deal with new challenges in the guise of “mass society”. The article examines the work of Ortega-y-Gasset “Revolt of the Masses”. The think-er's approach to “mass society” is marked by his desire to solve the “main riddle” of Western civilization’s current state: how could a liberty-oriented society of project-entrepreneurial type produce its own opposite? The answer deals with the dual nature of the previous century’s liberal classics.
