Abstract

The article analyses the impact of changes in the Vietnamese consumer market on the country’s foreign trade relations, based on data from the General Statistics Office of Vietnam and the International Trade Centre. The focus of the study is the vietnamese food market.
The main part of the paper consecutively discusses Vietnam’s achievements in addressing hunger and food security, changes in eating habits caused by economic growth and globalization, consequent shifts in production and imports of certain types of food. It is concluded that consumption patterns in Viet Nam are characterised by a moderate westernisation with an increasing proportion of meat and dairy products and wheat in the diet. Due to natural climatic and geographical constraints, the identified changes stimulate imports and pose the risk of foreign trade dependence and loss of food security.
