Abstract
Subject. To date, in the difficult conditions of development of the Russian economy, among
other things, the study of theoretical aspects of sustainable development causes a lot of discussions, which
predetermines further study of this issue, including at regional levels.
Objectives. The purpose of this study is to classify approaches to the definition of the concept of “sustainable
development of the region”.
Methodology. The methods of formal logic, analysis and synthesis were used to achieve the goal.
Results. Against the background of an increasing number of publications devoted to the study of theoretical
aspects of sustainable development, the vision of scientists regarding both the concept of “sustainable
development” and its basic conditions remains ambiguous. Based on the review of interpretations of the
concept of “sustainable development of the region”, methodological approaches to their interpretation were
identified and classified.
Conclusions. Critical evaluation and classification of approaches of interpretations of the concept of
“sustainable development of the region” allowed to reveal in their content a number of unaccounted essential
features, significant from the position of modern realities. The article proposes a clarification of the concept of
“sustainable development of the region”, allowing, unlike those available in the literature, to interpret it taking
into account its basic characteristics and modern conditions.
