Abstract
The article examines the evolution of foreign and domestic theories of spatial development, which made it possible to determine the main components of the spatial development of the region. The factors influencing the introduction and change of concepts of spatial development of the region are identified, which are: industrialization of industry, changes in the structure of the world economy, urbanization and demographic shifts, digitalization, etc. Based on the analysis of the authors’ approaches to the concept of «spatial development of the region», this concept has been improved, under which it is proposed to understand the complex, structural process of transformation and optimization of the territorial structure of the region in the context of global challenges and the digital age, in order to improve the quality of life of the population, sustainable economic growth and optimal use of natural and human resources, while taking into account both natural conditions, as well as social, economic and cultural aspects.
