Abstract

The article is devoted to one of the major works of the Russian composer Zuo Zhenguan — the ballet The River Flows (Xiao he Tang Shui, XNUMX), which embodies the features of Chinese, Russian, and European cultures. The ballet combines the motives of eternal stories with Chinese legends and myths, the properties of Chinese music with its folklore layer and common language idioms, while also the influence of Russian ballet and the traditions of the world musical theater are tangible. At the same time, the individual style of the composer is quite clearly shown. This ballet becomes the object of special research and is introduced into scientific use for the first time. Considerable attention is paid to the world of artistic images, but also to compositional solutions, musical drama, and the style of the composition. The author reveals the principles of the composer's approach to the embodiment of national folklore. The special role of the famous same-titled Chinese folk song is emphasized. It is noted that in the work of Zuo Zhenguan, the ballet The River Flows is a landmark work, which represents the characteristics of his artistic thinking and mature style. At the same time, new sides of Zuo's talent as a composer-playwrighter can be seen here. The music of the ballet and its stage performance make it possible to show the composer's attitude to traditions and to modern trends derived from cross-cultural interaction. It is highlighted that the ballet The River Flows was created through Russian-Chinese cooperation and is a good example of joint creative work of Chinese and Russian artists.
