Abstract

The article presents the testimonies of eyewitnesses and performers about the history of the production of Tchaikovsky's opera "Eugene Onegin" in China, which first became known to Chinese audience in 20s. It is stated that the premiere of "Eugene Onegin" was held in an abbreviated version at the Central Music Conservatory of Tianjin on May 26, 1956 by teachers and students under the direction of Huang Lifei. Professors and vocal teachers from the Soviet Union — P. M. Medvedev and N. K. Kuklina-Vrana contributed to the first production, the historical significance of which is that it was performed in Chinese. It was difficult to translate the literary text of the opera due to the need to correlate the Chinese verbal text with the musically complex opera parts, while retaining the charm of Pushkin's poetry. However, this made the opera more accessible to music lovers. And in August 1962 the opera "Eugene Onegin" was released without any changes at Beijing's "Tian Qiao" Theater.
