Abstract

The article analyzes the problem connected with the scientific understanding of the creative heritage of I. V. Yershov, whose name, on the one hand, was considered by contemporaries as equivalent to that of F. I. Chaliapin, and on the other hand, over time appeared to be in the shadow of the latter, which has not yet found an appropriate response in Russian musicology. Meanwhile, the necessity to comprehensively study the art of Ivan Yershov was understood already in the first half of the last century, as reflected in the publications of his contemporaries.
In this context, the authors compare the general biographical information concerning F. I. Chaliapin and I. V. Yershov. Based on this comparison, the conclusion is drawn both on a certain similarity of the beginning of their creative paths, as well as on the significant differences in their artistic individuality, which ultimately influenced the career development and the scale of popularity of each of the singers.
However, an appeal to this topic showed that materials concerning Yershov's activity are not very extensive and require special research. At the same time, his legacy needs to be studied both from the point of view of restoring historical justice and considering the aspect of interdisciplinary intersections. Obviously, such problems are in dire need of serious scientific rethinking from the perspective of contemporary musicology.
