Abstract
The article explores the artistic phenomenon of "Chapayev" in the little-known opera of the
same name by A. N. Kholminov, completed in 1. Since this was not the first and not the
last appeal to the Civil War episodes narrated by D. Furmanov, the legendary film "Chapayev"
(1936) by the Vasilyev brothers, B. Mokrousov's opera "Chapay" (1942, 1957), V. Pelevin's
novel "Chapayev and Pustota" (1996) came into view. The publication "My Unknown Chapayev"
(2005) by Evgeniya Chapayeva, great-granddaughter of the war hero, and the TV series
"Chapayev Passion" directed by S. Shcherbinin based on the script by E. Volodarsky (2013),
are noteworthy. Various versions of D. Furmanov's novel, preserved in the archives, which
give an idea of the work of the writer and screenwriters are named.
The analysis of the full text of the novel [3] leads to the conclusion that it is distinguished
by its diversity, combining different genre and stylistic forms, using the means of creating
a historical narrative, documentary prose, mythological tale and romantic novel, as well as
contrasting scenes and episodes. This turned out to be important for understanding the specifics
of the main object of research — Kholminov's opera "Chapayev".
The paper considers the principles of revealing the images of the main characters and folk
scenes of the opera in relation to Furmanov's text. Particular attention is focused on the special
role of the choir and on the unusual musical component of Chapayev's characteristics.
