Abstract

The image of the Lake Baikal is a favorite theme of local artists, and each of them finds special ways in its disclosure. This article is devoted to the description of the artistic image of the Lake Baikal, presented in the works of Irkutsk artists V. I. Osipov and V. M. Mironenko. Baikal landscape appears different in mood and manner of execution. Thus, the landscapes “Baikal. Bridge” and “Baikal” from the series “Different Baikal” (2015) by V. I. Osipov are painted in the style of realism; while V. M. Mironenko's works “Moonlight Sonata of Baikal” and “Protection of Baikal” inherit the traditions of symbolism. In the context of the designated research topic, the concept of natural symbol in visual arts is introduced. Numerous images of the Lake Baikal belong to landscape painting, in which Baikal is depicted as a natural symbol of the Eastern Siberia. The above mentioned works are considered from the standpoint of artistic and stylistic approach of art criticism analysis, the features characteristic of this approach are revealed. Finally, conclusions are drawn based on the results of analyzing the presented landscape works in the context of this approach.
