Abstract
This article examines the period of study of the outstanding Chinese conductor Cao Peng at the Moscow Conservatory. The documentary base allows to introduce into scientific use new material unknown to date in both Chinese and Russian musicology. The archival sources of educational institutions are attributed as universal resources of authentic materials important both for historical context and for assessing the stages of professional development of undergraduate and postgraduate music students. As universal keepers of history, archives are of exceptional value, surpassing the value of other sources. The article analyses a set of documents from Cao Peng’s personal file, including autobiographical information. By the time he entered the Moscow Conservatory, Cao Peng already had considerable experience as a conductor in leading Chinese creative collectives, which gave him an advantage over other Chinese applicants for admission to the Conservatory. The analysis of documents from Cao Peng’s personal file made it possible to gradually reconstruct the course of the conductor-symphonist’s studies in his homeland and at the Moscow Conservatory in the class of Professor L. Ginzburg.
