Abstract
The article analyses the emergence of a conservatory in the peripheral city of regional subordination from the perspective of the reasons and circumstances that determined this event. The topic of the “Magnitogorsk phenomenon” has been repeatedly raised and discussed in newspapers and magazines, in scientific articles and works of various levels, speeches at scientific conferences, etc. The most active discussions occurred in the second half of the 1990s during the period of the Conservatory’s formation, but gradually the interest in this problem decreased, only occasionally appearing as a statement of the uniqueness of the situation. The anniversary, celebrated in 2023 by the Magnitogorsk Conservatory, is an excellent occasion to analyse the objective and subjective factors that influenced the emergence of this phenomenon, especially since the past 30 years are an effective time corrector for evaluating the event. What factors turned out to be effective for the emergence of a music university in a peripheral industrial environment? The answer to this question, according to the author, should be sought in the history of cultural development of Magnitogorsk. It reflects the creative activity of the state, which provided the necessary socio-economic conditions, as well as of the teachers and musicians, who formed the traditions of professional art, contributing to the birth of the Magnitogorsk Conservatory.
