Abstract

Mixed media works are a completely new space for experimental creativity, involving a reflection on materials, forms and concepts, in line with the general trend in the development of contemporary world art. Many Chinese painters have shown great interest in the development of this field. This study focuses on the mixed media works by Chinese artists and justifies the relevance of this phenomenon as an issue of modern Chinese art theory. The article reveals the approaches of Chinese theorists to the study of experimental art as a phenomenon of the modern artistic life in the country. The problems of Chinese art criticism are revealed. The results of the development of the topic to date include the systematisation of the artists’ existing approaches to the use of materials, as well as the description of the effects they achieve through the use of mixed media. However, as the analysis of scientific theory shows, there is a lack of studies that comprehensively cover the problem. The key concepts remain largely unclear, the terminological apparatus has not been developed, in particular, the basic terms “mixed media painting” and “composite materials” need to be clarified. In addition, the study highlights the problem of the exclusion of many works by contemporary Chinese artists from scientific discourse. The incorporation and systematisation of this valuable material into the scholarly circulation is a promising area of research, allowing the main trends and patterns in the development of modern Chinese mixed media painting to be identified.
