Abstract

The article is devoted to the study of the problem of adaptation of foreign students to the sociocultural conditions of Russia. The interest in obtaining higher education in the Russian Federation remains quite high nowadays despite sanctions from Western European countries. That is why the problem of adaptation of foreign students to the conditions of living and studying in Russia as an unusual linguistic and socio-cultural environment is becoming urgent.
Purpose. Identification of the peculiarities of the adaptation process by foreign students at the university in a small town.
Methodology and methods. The sociocultural approach was used to understand the process of adaptation by foreign students at a university in a small town. The questionnaire survey was used to identify the specifics of adaptation process among students who came from different countries.
Scientific novelty. The study revealed the features of adaptation of foreign students to the conditions of a small city. For optimal passage of the adaptation period students need to have a support system that is including the development of special programs covering familiarization with the cultural, national, socio-economic, and regional characteristics of the students’ place of residence and forming an effective interaction with representatives of various ethnic groups.
Practical significance. The identified features of adaptation of foreign students can be used to form an effective system of support for university students in a small town.
