Abstract

In the article, based on the analysis of literary sources, forecasting is considered as one of the most important forms of state regulation of the economy. At the same time, different definitions of the concept of forecasting are given in the economic literature. In our opinion, forecasting should be characterized as an integral part of the management process, as developments preceding the adoption of a management decision and capable of covering more distant periods and processes that are not amenable to specific targeted planning at the moment. At the same time, the forecast characterizes the possible directions of economic development, its various options, it is intended to increase the scientific validity of planning, primarily in relation to the choice of the optimal option from a variety of possible directions of development. At the same time, economic forecasting, being a form of cognition and prediction of objective processes of economic development in their specific, quantitatively defined form, also plays an independent, and in some cases a leading role in the entire system of management and planning.
