Abstract

The article provides a brief overview of the scientific data of domestic and foreign authors, as well as the results of their own research on two retroviral infections in cats: leukemia and immunodeficiency. The authors have analyzed the possibility of application of PCR method to detect the DNA of leukemia and immunodeficiency viruses in cats in Moscow. It has been found that frequency and possibility of detection of viral leukemia and immunodeficiency depends on the social status of cats. The authors showed that DNA of provirus causative agents of leukemia and immunodeficiency viruses can be detected in pedigree and free walking cats by PCR method in latent course of the disease. The authors recommend that a positive PCR result should be considered as a basis for a diagnosis. The negative PCR result indicates the absence of leukemia and immunodeficiency viruses in animal blood cells at the time of the study and requires repeated PCR analysis in 30–60 days.
