The book was written by a graduate of the Moscow Theological Academy and defended in it in 2005 as a candidate dissertation. Subsequently, in 2006, His Holiness Patriarch Alexy II blessed the publication of the book, and it was repeatedly reprinted. What is life? Why do we live and how should we live? These questions have always worried humanity. In the book, the author answers these questions by expounding the doctrine of 38 holy fathers of the Philokalia. All the many-sided doctrine of the Holy Fathers about Christian life has its indisputable foundation for the revealed truths about the purpose and meaning of human life. The true active life of a person is the way to realize the Divine plan for man, the fulfillment by man of his destiny on earth. It is the fulfillment by man of the work of salvation by acquiring the Holy Spirit of God, by recreating and transforming it into a perfect image and likeness of God. This is a deep spiritual process that elevates the soul and body of a person to close unity with God and deification, which begins with baptism and extends to infinite eternity. Touching on the question of the purpose of human existence, the Holy Fathers will certainly speak of those obstacles that exist on the way to achieving this goal by a person, about the objective and subjective conditions of active life, about how active life begins and what it leads to. The book reveals the teachings of the Holy Fathers about the creation of God by man, the Fall, the Atonement, the Church of Christ, the grace of God and eschatology. The answer to the question is what is evil and how to evade evil and do good. The patristic doctrine of the spiritual qualities of the laborer, of the virtues that he must have and perfect: the faith, repentance, hope, fear of God, humility, prayer, prudence, passionlessness, love. Many other issues are also covered. We, dear reader, are pleased to fulfill the blessing in Bose of the late His Holiness Patriarch Alexy II and to present the next edition of the book in full accordance with the text that he read.
