The results of the study of icon painting as a theological phenomenon in its historical development are presented, the concepts of “icon painting canon”, “icon painting tradition”, “innovation” are highlighted, and the phenomenon of the icon in its ontological dimension is shown. Particular attention is paid to the artistic and symbolic language of icon painting, elements of iconography (gestures, color, etc.). A significant part of the book is devoted to the painting of churches and the iconography of saints, incl. associated with the Nizhny Novgorod land.
