The monograph examines the centuries-old transformation of the ballet costume as a historical and cultural phenomenon. The presentation of the material is based on the combination of a factual database on classical dance and its technique with the system of artistic thinking of costume creators. Based on the analysis of foreign and domestic information sources, the development paths of the ballet costume from the emergence of a professional ballet theater in the 17th century to the present day are considered. Its various types (chiton, tutu, tunic, tights) are analyzed and examples of the directions of development of stage costume design are given, the purpose of which is to identify the inner potential of the actor's personality and express the performing dance style.
The monograph also includes an understanding and study of some aspects of the work of artists, especially those from the turn of the 19th and early 20th centuries, who participated in S. P. Diaghilev’s “Russian Seasons”, demonstrating new approaches to designing costume images from the point of view of rethinking classical eras and introducing new ideas and materials in accordance with the demands of the time.
The publication is intended for art and theatre experts, practitioners of choreographic directing, as well as students, master's students and postgraduates interested in both ballet theatre and design.
