Abstract

The article deals with the phenomenon of public art as a contemporary art movement, which is beginning to play a significant role in the construction of urban imagery. Modern sculpture and urban art projects are replacing monuments and other traditional forms of decorative monumental art due to changes in contemporary spatial and cultural discourse, understanding of the urban environment and human requirements for it. The inclusion of public art projects in the Russian cultural landscape is still non-systemic, but in recent years it has become more and more discussed and has the potential to increase. Working with street space implies specific professional competencies at the intersection of contemporary art, architecture, and urban design. At the moment, there is no specialization in public art in Russian universities. In order to integrate into professional environment and find contact with the audience, artists have to acquire many of the necessary skills on their own from disparate sources or in non-state educational institutions. The purpose of the article is to formulate the essence and distinctive features of public art as an artistic practice, competencies and skills necessary to implement contemporary art projects in urban environment.
