Abstract

The intensification of milk production is impossible without the introduction of new and improvement of existing methods of growing replacement heifers. The way newborn calves are received, raised and maintained is an important factor in determining their future productivity. The article considers the effectiveness of keeping calves in individual enclosures on straw bedding. The research was carried out by staging one scientific and economic experiment in the winter, and the other – in the summer period of the year. The structural elements of the equipment made it possible to reduce the time spent on the process of feeding colostrum and milk, as well as to create comfortable conditions for raising animals and the work of operators who cared for the calves. It has been established that this method of keeping from birth to 91 days of age makes it possible to significantly (P<0,01) increase the live weight of heifers in winter by 10,0 kg (by 10,7 %), and in summer – by 18,5 kg (by 19,6 %). At the same time, the payment for feed by increments in the winter period of the year increases by 16,9 %, and in the summer period by 19,5 % compared to the traditional way of keeping – group loose under a shady canopy with a group feeder.
